Daytime Running Lights
Why Daytime
Running Lights?
What
is the main reason given after an accident between two
vehicles?
“I
really did not see that car, it came out of nowhere!”
No, we are not talking about UFOs, but regular vehicles
that had been on the road all along, only a distracted
driver did not pay attention! You the driver of
the oncoming vehicle, how do you PROTECT YOURSELF and
avoid hearing such a poor excuse?
By making your vehicle more visible, hence safer!
One
answer: Daytime Running Lights, because DRLs at
sufficient intensity, increase visual contrast between
vehicles and their background.
The success of Daytime Running Lights comes from the recognition
by all of one evidence:
When it comes to being on the
road, VISIBILITY means SAFETY!

Daytime Running Lights awareness has soared over the past
10 years in the United States since ruling 108 by NHTSA,
the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which
allowed the use of Daytime Running Lights by American
Auto Manufacturers.
In 1993, NHTSA ruled in favor of the use of Daytime Running
lights by issuing ruling 108.
- In
a 1996 ruling, the Texas Department of Insurance allowed
insurance companies to offer premium discounts with
the use of DRLs.
Other states have since followed suit!
- Leading
car manufacturers such as GM and Ford are now featuring
Daytime Running Lights as original equipment on their
latest models.

Those measures follow the numerous studies carried in
the US but also in Europe and Canada- where DRLs have
been mandatory for years. All DRL test results show a
tremendous reduction of up to 38% in collisions in the
first year of installation See report and test results
from SAE Technical papers below. A study by Avis Rent
A Car showed a 64% reduction in car damages, and a
69% decrease in repair costs for cars equipped
with DRLs. Quite impressive figures you will surely
agree. The cost of accidents can be quite high, including
vehicle repair cost, downtime, liability for personal
injury and sometimes death, insurance premium increases...!
Government
studies show that with a “dedicated” Daytime Running Light
fitted to fleet vehicles, a two percent accident reduction
is all that is needed to realize the benefits of Daytime
Running Lights. In addition to reduced repair cost, insurance
companies do re-evaluate fleet insurance premiums when
DRLs are installed, resulting in lower premiums!

Why
use headlights during the day?
Studies
have shown that driving with headlights on during daylight
hours will reduce your chances of being involved in an
accident. These studies have been conducted in the United
States, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Finland. In all cases
the studies have shown a positive reduction in daytime
multiple collisions. A 1964 study of 181 US companies,
showed a reduction in daytime accidents up to 38%. In
addition the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
has conducted their own preliminary studies that indicate
a 20% reduction in daytime accidents.
The purpose
of daytime Running Lights (DRL) is to increase the conspicuity
of the vehicle to all traffic and to do it more efficiently
than the vehicle’s own headlight system. It is estimated
that up to 45% of all accidents occur because of perception
and recognition errors. This involves improperly, judging
a vehicle’s speed or not seeing the other vehicle soon
enough. If your vehicle was equipped with DRL’s other
vehicles would see you sooner and better.
